Violence is a pervasive issue that affects individuals and societies worldwide. It can take many forms, each leaving deep scars—physically, emotionally, or psychologically. Whether it happens in homes, workplaces, communities, or even online, violence undermines the well-being and safety of countless individuals every day.
On November 25th, we observe International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the widespread issue of gender-based violence and advocating for the elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls. This day was established by the United Nations to honor the memory of the Mirabal Sisters, three Dominican activists who were assassinated in 1960 for their opposition to the regime of Rafael Trujillo. It serves as a reminder of the urgent need to take action against the violence that affects women and girls worldwide.
To effectively address and prevent violence, we must first understand its various types and how they manifest in different environments:
• Physical Violence: This form involves inflicting harm through actions like hitting, kicking, or burning. The impact is often visible, but its emotional and psychological toll can be just as damaging.
• Emotional/Psychological Violence: Verbal abuse, coercion, or manipulation are the hallmarks of this type of violence. It seeks to destroy a person’s mental well-being, leading to long-lasting emotional scars.
• Sexual Violence: Encompassing assault, exploitation, and harassment, sexual violence is one of the most devastating forms, robbing individuals of their autonomy and dignity.
• Economic/Financial Abuse: When access to financial resources is restricted or sabotaged, it leaves victims dependent and powerless. Economic abuse often makes it more difficult for individuals to escape from abusive situations.
• Technological Abuse: In today’s digital age, technology is increasingly used to manipulate, stalk, and harass individuals. Cyberstalking, non-consensual sharing of private images, and online threats are serious forms of violence that can have real-world consequences.
As we observe this day and the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, let us renew our commitment to ending violence in all its forms and creating a world where women and girls can live freely, safely, and with dignity.
